This challenging program offers exciting opportunities school-wide, to design projects and conduct research, and expose students to potential STEM careers. Students in Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 participate in STEM projects through academic classes, labs, and extracurricular activities.
Qualified students in grades 8-9 may apply to participate in a formal STEM program - a rigorous, intensive program that emphasizes research and creative problem solving. As a supplement to the standard science and math curriculum, the program provides exceptional preparation for pursuing STEM fields at the college level.
STEM students learn to implement rigorous research methodology as they design projects and conduct research. They learn how to analyze their results with the greatest possible measure of reliability and validity, draw conclusions, and identify the need for further investigation. The goal of the program is to guide and empower students who are capable of applying these inquiry skills in the research setting of an internship, in higher education, or at the professional level.
As freshmen, STEM students are exposed to the different areas within the STEM fields. They also explore a technical curriculum designed to engage their minds with complex problem solving. Throughout the rest of their STEM career, they will utilize these new skills and design research projects of their own, culminating with the completion of a STEM thesis research project.
Participants in the STEM program meet regularly as a class within the normal rotational school schedule, which provides dedicated time to work with their STEM teachers and with their STEM classmates. Indian Creek has also set aside laboratory space to provide STEM and non-STEM students the opportunity to engage in research, listen to a guest speaker, or try their hand at 3D printing or digital microscopy.
In addition, approved STEM classes are sequenced to help students maximize the number of both core and AP-level science and math classes they can take as part of their program requirements. Throughout the course of the program, students are exposed to a wide variety of careers in STEM fields. Teachers strive to increase the number of students majoring in STEM fields at the college level.
